Senior Fellow
Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, Belgium

• The seizure and control of energy assets in both Iraq and Syria is the new frontline in asymmetric warfare

• Hijacking of energy assets, and their infrastructure, has been vastly underestimated and under-appreciated by governments allowing relatively small groups to sustain long-term hostilities against their adversaries

• The successful tactics of disaffected groups will likely be replicated by others globally unless governments come to appreciate and protect these critical assets which also include hydropower assets

• This suggests a return to conventional warfare by unconventional groups

• What can be done to counter this trend?
